Watch a kid on a climbing wall for five minutes and you’ll see them do something rare. They’ll stop, stare at the wall, and think. Then they’ll try something, fall, think again, and try something different.
Researchers have been watching that same loop, and the studies on what climbing does for kids keep pointing in the same direction. Here’s what they’ve found, in plain English.
Strong bodies, the kind that carry over
The CDC recognizes climbing as a muscle-strengthening activity for children and teens. That matters because climbing works nearly everything at once, core, arms, forearms, shoulders, legs, glutes, and the small muscles of the hands, while also building endurance and flexibility.
There’s a quieter benefit underneath the strength. Climbing builds proprioception, a kid’s awareness of where their body is in space, and it has them constantly crossing the body’s midline as arms and legs work together. Child development resources like ADDitude note that midline crossing is linked to reading success and classroom confidence. Your kid thinks they’re playing. Their nervous system is doing homework.
A puzzle on a wall
Every route is a problem to solve. Kids scan the wall, plan a sequence, test it, and adapt when the plan fails. Researchers describe this as training cognitive flexibility, the ability to shift strategies when new information arrives, and it transfers to the classroom.
One high school in Naperville, Illinois, added climbing to a learning readiness PE program and found consistent correlations with improved literacy and math results over multiple years.
For kids with ADHD, the findings are worth knowing about. A controlled study found that climbing at light to moderate intensity was associated with attention improvements during sessions for every child with ADHD in the study, and 100% of the parents rated climbing as effective for their kids. The Pediatric Research Foundation is now funding further research on climbing and executive function in young people.
Lower anxiety scores, measured
A 2024 study published in Frontiers in Psychology compared 57 adolescent climbers, ages 11 to 16, against 91 similar non-athletes using standard psychiatric assessment tools. The climbers scored significantly lower on both separation anxiety and generalized anxiety, and the longer a kid had been climbing, the lower the scores tended to be.
One honest caveat, because we’d rather earn your trust than impress you: that study shows correlation, not proof of cause. It can’t fully rule out that less anxious kids are more drawn to climbing. The researchers themselves say the combination of physical effort and mental focus “may offer protective benefits,” and that’s the right level of confidence to hold. A 2021 review of 18 clinical trials found therapeutic climbing positively affected physical, mental, and social health measures, and the youth-specific research is still growing.
The failure part, which might matter most
In climbing, falling is normal. It’s built in. Every fall tells a kid what to try differently, which makes the wall a near-perfect practice ground for what Stanford researcher Carol Dweck calls a "growth mindset," the belief that ability grows through effort and better strategies. Dweck’s research shows kids praised for their process, their effort, and persistence become more resilient learners who seek out challenges instead of avoiding them.
A climbing wall hands out that lesson all day long. The route that beat your kid today gets solved next week, and they watch it happen.
